ECOLOGY
When we extract and process natural stones, we always aim to maintain a good ecological balance. We cover 100% of our electricity requirements with our own renewable energies and also feed around 20% into the power grid. Thanks to our photovoltaic systems, we save around 200 tons of CO2 every year. The SSG group of companies is a founding member of the Altmühltal Environmental Pact, which focuses on protecting species and creating habitats for wildlife.
Environmentally friendly with a steady value
Natural stones like SOLNHOFENER Natural Stone and MAXBERG® Jura Limestone are free from pollutants. Limestones are formed from biomass and are completely free from radiation. Moreover, they last a very long time and are very durable. While many building materials tend to look worse with time, real stones often become even more charming as they develop a natural patina. Additionally, most natural stones can be cleaned or polished to maintain their appearance.
A study conducted by PE International, a respected group of sustainability experts, confirms that natural stone facades have an excellent environmental impact.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT
The continuous improvement of all corporate processes is integral to our corporate philosophy. We think it's important to improve how efficiently we use energy in our processes, which is why we follow the DIN EN ISO 50001 energy management system. This helps us to be more energy-efficient and do our part in protecting the environment.
What have we achieved so far?
Ever since we started using our energy management system, we have managed to make our energy use significantly better, especially through these projects:
- Energy-efficient modernization of the vehicle fleet, partly with hybrid technology
- Converting part of our lighting technology to LED.
- Renewing compressed air compressors at the Solnhofen and Gundelsheim sites.
- Retrofitting speed controls on electric drives.
- Sensitising our employees to energy-conscious behaviours.
Our next project ideas
- Using energy-efficient drives in new acquisitions and replacement measures.
- Increasing the use of photovoltaic systems.
